awkward moments, fiction, fitting in, new friends, new school, short story, writing

Mita waved goodbye to her mother at the gate. She stood watching the familiar figure grow smaller, swallowed by the crowd. Then she took a deep breath and turned into a sea of unfamiliar faces.

St. Theresa’s Convent High School loomed ahead.

She hitched up her brand-new satchel, tightened the brown sash over her pink pinafore, and cringed her way through throngs of squealing girls until she found the Counsellor’s room.

“5th Std, Ma’am. I’m the new student,” Mita said.

The Counsellor, clutching a thick bundle of class lists, pushed back an unruly curl. “Second floor, Room 202.”

Mita climbed the broad stone steps, her hand brushing the cool, ancient wall. Her old school—Vidya Mandir—had cement walls. She imagined her friends there now, reciting the Pasaydaan. Just then, she heard “Lord save us, Amen” echoing from upstairs.

Room 202. She found it. Politely asked to be let in.

Ms. D’Souza waved her toward an empty space in the fourth row. Forty-two curious pairs of eyes followed her as she squeezed in and slipped her lunchbox under the desk.

Ms. D’Souza ran her pen down the attendance sheet. She frowned.

“There must be a mistake. You’re not listed here, Mita. Try 5th B—just next door.”

Mita flushed as all eyes turned to her again. She bolted her satchel shut, grabbed her lunchbox, and scuttled out.

Next door, she gave a nervous knock on 5th B. Mita, now freshly wiser, lingered on the threshold despite Ms. Mary’s wave.

“No, dear,” said Ms. Mary kindly. “Try 5th C. Next door.”

Banished once more, Mita bit her lip. She wished her father hadn’t taken the new job—from Mumbai to Bangalore. A promotion for him, yes. An utter demotion for her.

But 5th C had no place for her. Neither did 5th D. Nor E.

Now sweating and breathless, she rounded the corner into 5th F.

Mr. Xavier ran his pen down the list, muttering, “Mita, Mita…”
Then, with a sigh: “No, my dear child.”

More eyes. More giggles. Mita’s toes curled with the desperate wish to disappear.

But then—Mr. Xavier’s pen reversed direction, moving up the list.

“Ah!” he said, eyes lighting up. “Here! It’s written Sanyal Mita instead of Mita Sanyal. Yes, yes. Class, please welcome our new student.”

Knees trembling, Mita plonked herself down at the nearest empty desk.

Her benchmate turned and gave her a warm smile.

Oh, the difference between them and us.

morsel stuck in tooth, slowmotion writing, writing tips

Mira sat still in the office meeting. Ramrod straight. Eyes fixated on the screen. She was glad the Corona mask hid her face, because all her attention was rivetted on her tongue tip.

The tip did an acrobatic leap, a desperate attempt to reach that tiny gap between her last 2 molars. Wedged in between 2 molars , deep and snug next to her gums, lay a tiny morsel of apple. Her breakfast apple.

The tongue tip worked like a spade, then curled like a scoop, dug in like a spoon. It scraped the inner, then the outer surface of the molar. No use. The morsel hid deeper like a soldier ducking into his trench.

Mira felt a slight give, and her pulse quickened. The morsel rotated in its grave. It somersaulted. Its skin now lay stuck to her gums.

Mira’s jaw ached. Her tongue begged for mercy. It had been swaying, tugging, cajoling that morsel for – Mira’s eyes swung to her watch – was it only 2 minutes?

Mira fidgeted. She itched to dig in a manicured fingernail and yank out that damned morsel. Ah! that apple tasted so crisp crunchy at breakfast. Now, an hour past its prime, it felt wilted and tasted rotten in her mouth.

Apples dont always protect you from doctors. This one would probably force her into a dentist’s chair!

Mira swung her jaw side to side to dislodge the stubborn bite. No use.

The speaker droned on. Mira heard not a word.

Then Mira felta slight give. And thensome more. Some more. And Yessss – the morsel finally surfaced and was quickly flushed down her throat.

Mira grinned behind her mask. Then she realised the entire room was looking at her. Then it dawned on her that she had said the ‘Yesss’ out loud.

The above was an exercise in ‘slow motion writing’, as part of Himalayan Writing Workshop by Chetan Mahajan. Click here for more details The writing is targeted at zooming in and amplifying a moment, making it visual, sensory and raw.

Did it work? Did you relate? Had the same experience

The bath-tub was anointed with lavender oil and rose petals. Deva Bapu rose from the tub. 3 female attendants knelt to spread a fluffy white towel at his feet. Deva spun the saffron robes around his considerable girth. One attendant stood on tiptoe to daub horizontal gashes of vermillion and ash across his broad forehead. Her nipples, demure in white silk, grazed against bare nipples. She blushed and swayed in ecstasy. Another attendant wound rosary beads around his hairy wrist.

Deva Bapu heard the shuffle of impatient thighs scraping the floor directly above his head. He knew the assembly was packed with devotees. He flicked a glance at the mirror. Miracle Bapu stared back at him. His eyes were bloodshot and flat as a snake. He didn’t doubt his divinity.  Continue reading →

“On your toes, comrades! The enemy borders are leaky, their defenses are down, the field is ripe & wide open. Their blood is half toxins, half hatred. This is the perfect time to attack,’’ spit out their chief.

“Will you be watching our backs?” enquired one of the young ones.

“Certainly not, kiddo. It’s war, not a picnic. Each one for himself. That’s how we succeed over and over.”

The youngest recruit juggled the duffel bag, “Why aren’t we allowed to carry munchies? I feel hungry on these missions.” Continue reading →
